UFV's Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree prepares you to collaborate with individuals, families, groups and communities in diverse environments and cultural settings. 

Upon graduation, you can apply to register with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (RSW) Or opt to pursue further studies and complete a Master of Social Work degree at UFV.

You enter the BSW when you are in the third year after completing 60 university-level credits. Once admitted to the BSW program, you will complete two practicums with one of UFV's community partners.

 

Child Welfare specialization

Choose to specialize your Bachelor of Social Work in the area of child welfare, where you may complete a practicum with the Ministry of Children and Family Development or a Delegated Aboriginal Agency.

Minimum scores required for Qualifying Studies

  • *IELTS (Academic): score of 6.0 or higher with a minimum band score of 5.5
  • TOEFL (includes Home Edition): score of 80 or higher (iBT) with no section below 19
  • PTE: score of 56 with 52 in writing
  • Cambridge: Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - C
  • Cambridge: First Certificate in English (FCE) - A
  • EIKEN: Grade Pre-1
  • English 12 C- (or recognized Canadian equivalent)
  • **DET: score of 100 or higher

English Language Studies (ELS)

If you do not meet our Qualifying Studies level, you may be eligible for the English Language Studies (ELS) foundational English and academic upgrading program

After completing the ELS program, you may be eligible for the Qualifying Studies level. To be eligible for ELS, you must have a minimum IELTS score (or equivalent) of 5.5 with no band score below 5.0.

There are three levels of ELS. Each level of ELS usually takes one semester.

You can apply for the ELS program if:

  • You do not meet the minimum for Qualifying Studies.
  • You do meet the minimum for ELS.

Minimum scores required for ELS

University Foundation Level (combined English and academic upgrading)

  • *IELTS: score of 5.5 or higher with a minimum band score of 5.0
  • TOEFL (includes Home Edition): score of 71 (iBT) with no section below 16
  • EIKEN: Grade 2A with CSE 2400 or higher
  • PTE: score of 46 with 44 in writing
  • **DET: score of 90 or higher

Academic background and requirement

60 general university-level credits by May 1 of the year of application, including the following:

  • Six credits from SOWK 110 and SOWK 210
  • Three credits in English composition: CMNS 125 or ENGL 105
  • Three credits of English literature: ENGL 108–170
  • Three credits of human development: SOWK 225 or PSYC 250
  • Three credits of courses with Indigenous or First Nations content (FNST, IPK, or an equivalent course)
  • 30 additional General credits (see Note)
  • 12 Discretionary elective credits (see Note)

Overall GPA of 2.67 for the 60 credits applied towards their BSW application.

A minimum of 400 hours of paid or volunteer experience in the human services field supervised by social workers or other professionals.

Program and personal suitability as determined through a personal statement.

All applicants must be aware of, willing, and able to uphold the Social Work Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
