Macquarie’s Bachelor of Science is for those excited by discovery and who question the norm.

Astronomy examines the universe via the light received from it. Astrophysics uses the laws of physics to interpret astronomical phenomena and determine the origin and evolution of the cosmos. 

Professionals in this field explore our understanding of celestial objects – such as planets, stars and galaxies – and how we have gained this insight.

In the Astronomy and Astrophysics major, you’ll develop the ability to independently and creatively solve problems by applying core physical principles and relevant mathematical and computational techniques. 

You’ll learn to manipulate data sets using standard astronomical software packages. 

You’ll be able to provide analytical solutions to astrophysical problems by manipulating equations describing physical principles and developing customised computer programs.

To apply for an undergraduate program, international students will need to have completed one or more of the following academic qualifications:

• A recognised senior secondary school qualification or university entrance examination, such as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (NSW HSC) or other equivalent Australian or overseas high school qualification
• A recognised university Foundation course
• A recognised 2 or 3-year Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree
• At least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution

Assumed knowledge

• HSC Mathematics Advanced (Band 4), or equivalent.

If you haven't met the required minimum level of achievement (Band 4 or equivalent), you can undertake an alternative introductory unit of study in that area.

• HSC Mathematics Advanced or equivalent, at least 2 units of science.

The Intensive program is designed for students needing extra academic support before they are undergraduate-ready. You need to have completed a Year 12 equivalent qualification to apply.
