Mathematics is the language of our technological society. It underpins most of the technical and scientific breakthroughs we take for granted daily. 

People equipped with this language will be positioned to communicate with and help drive future scientific and technological breakthroughs supporting humanity.

The Mathematics major features a modern, balanced curriculum designed to provide a sound foundation for a career or further study in any sector requiring mathematics. 

You’ll study a balance of pure and applied mathematics taught by internationally recognised research mathematicians. 

You’ll gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary role of mathematics and the way it contributes to development in other fields of study. 

And you’ll learn how to formulate and model practical and abstract problems in mathematical terms.

To apply for an undergraduate program, international students will need to have completed one or more of the following academic qualifications:

• A recognised senior secondary school qualification or university entrance examination, such as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (NSW HSC) or other equivalent Australian or overseas high school qualification
• A recognised university Foundation course
• A recognised 2 or 3-year Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree
• At least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution

Assumed knowledge

• HSC Mathematics Advanced (Band 4), or equivalent.

If you haven't met the required minimum level of achievement (Band 4 or equivalent), you can undertake an alternative introductory unit of study in that area.

Recommended studies:

• HSC Mathematics Advanced or equivalent, at least 2 units of science.
• HSC Physics.
• HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E2) or HSC Mathematics Extension 2, or equivalent.

Foundation and Intensive programs

If you have completed at least a Year 11 equivalent qualification and need additional academic support or further English skills to enter the first year of your undergraduate degree, these programs are for you. 

• Standard Foundation program

The Standard Foundation program is designed for students needing extra academic and English support before they are undergraduate-ready. You need to have completed at least a Year 11 equivalent qualification to apply.

• Intensive program

The Intensive program is designed for students needing extra academic support before they are undergraduate-ready. You need to have completed a Year 12 equivalent qualification to apply.
