Bachelor of Child Studies - Child and Youth Care Counsellor

Make a difference in the lives of children, youth and families who have been made vulnerable by systems and institutions. 

Learn the skills of counselling and advocacy in working with children and youth from ages eight to 18 at Mount Royal University

Gain knowledge and experience in areas such as relational practice, child and adolescent development, mental health, and assessment and intervention strategies.

Child and Youth Care Counsellor (CYCC) Post-diploma Entrance Option

Students possessing a completed CYCC diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution may apply through a competitive process directly into the third year of the Bachelor of Child Studies. 

Students accepted with a post-secondary diploma will normally receive transfer credit for up to 60 credits (20 courses) towards the Bachelor of Child Studies.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

The Language Education for Academic Purposes (LEAP) with four levels program is for low Intermediate to advanced level English language learners. 

The recommended minimum language level for student success is CLB 4 or an IELTS score of 3.5.

You can complete this 15-month program in four 13-week terms starting in either fall, winter, or spring.


Academic background and requirement

  • English Language Arts 30-1 - minimum grade 60%
  • High School Applicant: must present a minimum admission average of 65%, calculated on the five appropriate Grade 12 courses. Must also present the required courses and minimum grades listed above.
  • Mature Applicant: must present the required courses and minimum grades listed above.
  • Post-secondary applicant: must present a minimum admission Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 on the eight most recently completed transferable post-secondary courses (minimum 24 credits) completed by June 30. Must also present the required courses and minimum grades listed above.
