Master of Philosophy in German Language and Literature

Memorial’s Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures recognizes that interest in pursuing advanced studies in German may be stimulated by a wide variety of personal and professional experiences. 

It welcomes, therefore, students with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of goals. The cultural and linguistic knowledge acquired in German studies at the graduate level prepares students for employment, further study, or both. 

Those students interested in careers in teaching are encouraged to participate in Memorial's Teaching Skills Enhancement Program.

The MPhil program involves courses only, and can be completed in two years of full-time study.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available
Applicants who have provisional acceptance to Memorial University of Newfoundland, but have not obtained the English language proficiency requirements to be admitted, have the opportunity to take part in the Memorial University of Newfoundland's Intensive English Program (IEP).

Applicants in the IEP may provide evidence of reaching the required English language proficiency by way of their performance in their IEP coursework, or by achieving an acceptable score on an institutionally recognized test or one of the standardized tests stated blow.

Academic background and requirement

Bachelor's degree (minimum second class honours) in an appropriate area of study. 

Applicants will be required to demonstrate superior German language skills by submitting a writing sample in German. 

An interview may also be required.
