The English Language Centre (ELC) at the University of Manitoba (UM) offers the full-time Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP). 

If the student does not meet the English Language Proficiency requirement for their program of interest, the student can take advantage of this program to obtain the Academic English language skills needed to complete a degree.

Minimum score required: Pass Level 5/AEPUCE (Academic English Program for University and College Entrance)

Level 5

Also known as the Academic English Program for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE), Level 5 is designed to prepare students for admission to the University of Manitoba. 

Students who successfully pass Level 5 meet the English Language Proficiency requirements of most programs at the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg and Red River College.

If you have already achieved one of these minimum test scores, you may be eligible to enter Level 5 of the IAEP directly:

  • 5.5 (Academic) or higher in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  • 5.5 (Academic) or higher in the International English Language Testing System Indicator (IELTS Indicator) for Spring/Summer and Fall 2021 applications
  • Minimum 16 in each component and 70 overall on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • 3.5 Listening, 3.5 Reading and 3.5 Writing in the Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST)*
  • 50 or higher in the Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL)
  • Duolingo English Test (95 and above) for Spring/Summer and Fall 2021 applications

Academic background and requirement

An equivalent minimum average of 70% over the following senior level courses, with no less than 60% in each course: • English • Mathematics • A third academic course • A fourth academic course
