Overview

Bachelor of Science - Mathematics

Mathematics said to be the Queen of Sciences, has been around since humans first began using numbers. The permanence and universality of mathematics throughout the ages is a consequence of its very nature.

At Mount Allison University, the Mathematics program aims to provide an appreciation of the historical, theoretical and applied nature of mathematics.

All courses in the curriculum offer a blend of theory and practical applications. The program includes lectures supplemented by weekly labs where you can gain hands-on experience.

Introductory courses may introduce students to the applications to which calculus may be applied or the practical uses of statistics.

Upper-year courses deal with topics ranging from geometry to game theory.

You will be introduced to mathematical concepts such as:

  • the practical uses of statistical tools
  • theoretical studies of abstract relationships
  • the applications of calculus
  • the use of number theory in modern cryptography

Many of the courses offered include a substantial computational component, and students are encouraged to use the mathematical software tools available.

You are also encouraged to conduct independent summer research projects or to contribute to faculty research projects as a research assistant.

A Math Assessment Test may be used for a variety of courses to determine your present mathematics ability.

Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics:

As a Bachelor of Science student with a major in Mathematics, you'll combine your mathematics courses with courses in computer science, chemistry, physics, and other science courses.

A BSc honours Mathematics is also available.

Experiential learning opportunities are offered in every degree.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

DUOLINGO English Test: 110

If you meet Mount Allison's academic requirements, but don't meet our English proficiency requirements, you may be offered conditional admission.

If you're offered conditional admission, you can enroll in one of our English pathway programs designed for students who need extra time and training to meet our English proficiency requirements, and who would like to benefit from additional transition time and academic preparation before full-time study.

There are two program options to help you meet the requirements, depending on your level of English:

  • English Summer Pathway Program (June-August)
This program is offered during the summer. It includes classes in English and academic skills plus cultural trips and activities.
  • English Academic Bridging Program (EAB) (September-May)
This program is offered during the academic year. You'll be enrolled as a full-time Mount Allison student. You'll take three regular Mount Allison courses each term and two EAB courses, in English and academic skills.

Once you successfully complete one of Mount Allison's English language programs, you will get unconditional admission to Mount Allison (if you meet our academic requirements). No additional TOEFL or IELTS tests will be required.
